Your GPA is the credit-weighted average of your grade points: multiply each grade (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0) by the course credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. A weighted GPA adds +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP, IB or dual enrollment classes. P, NP and W grades are not counted.
Worked example
A college student takes three classes: an A in a 3-credit class, a B in a 4-credit class and a C+ in a 3-credit class.
- A: 4.0 × 3 = 12.0 quality points
- B: 3.0 × 4 = 12.0 quality points
- C+: 2.3 × 3 = 6.9 quality points
Total: 30.9 quality points ÷ 10 credits = 3.09 GPA.
If they already had a 3.40 over 30 credits, the new cumulative GPA is (3.40 × 30 + 30.9) ÷ 40 = 3.32.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my GPA?
Multiply each course grade point (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, and so on) by its credits, add those quality points together, and divide by the total credits. The calculator above does this for every term and for your cumulative GPA.
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
An unweighted GPA uses the plain 4.0 scale for every class. A weighted GPA adds bonus points for harder classes, usually +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP, IB or dual enrollment, so it can go above 4.0.
Do Pass/Fail and W grades count in GPA?
At most schools, no. P, NP and W grades do not earn grade points and their credits are left out of the GPA, so they neither raise nor lower it. A failing letter grade (F) does count as 0.0.
Is an A+ worth 4.0 or 4.33?
Most high schools and many colleges cap an A+ at 4.0, but some colleges give 4.33. Use the "A+ is worth" setting to match your school.
How do I calculate cumulative GPA?
Enter your current cumulative GPA and total credits in the optional box, then add your new courses. The calculator weights your old GPA by its credits and combines it with the new grades.
Does this match my official transcript?
It uses the standard US 4.0 scale, so it is a close estimate. Schools differ on plus/minus values, weighting and repeated courses, so your registrar has the final number.
